life lately #1

2016, Blogging, June, Photography

can you believe this my first post of 2016? it feels like meeting with a long-time friend and there is so much to share that i don’t even know where to start. i’m a little bit excited and a little bit fsjfjsnfkjsnajkfSJK.

what do you call it? word vomit.

but we gotta start somewhere. january seems like a good place (and as i type january i think wowza we are already, frightenly, half way through the year…yikes).

post-christmas and i was still eating like its christmas time. let’s be real…it wasn’t until the beginning of june did i realise i probably shouldn’t be still eating like it’s christmas …

let’s face it, january blues is a real thing (oh first world problems). work was, well. horrendous (for lack of a better word). while i won’t go into too much detail on the world wide web i will say, you can’t always trust the people you work with. every man for himself is a real thing that exists in the workplace. i just hadn’t even seen it before. especially not first hand. and while it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth i can talk about it now without punching. out. each. word. on. the. keyboard.

i did also learn though that not everyone is that way and there are still good people who will help lift and elevate each other in the workplace. not all is lost.

i made a decision to quit my job (even after all the drama it was not easy!) but first i had to find a new one. thanks to the support of my amazing friends and family i landed 3 job interviews. each being very different; a large corporation, a medium sized business and a start-up. the start-up was the most fun, first stage interview was a skype session, second stage, get this, they paid me (a decent amount too) to come up with a marketing plan to meet certain targets. i managed to land a job with the large corporation, which happens to also be the third best company to work for in the UK (according to the financial times top 100 list). so far it hasn’t disappointed.

by this time it’s march and since my new job and my favourite young man were based in swindon it only made sense to move, so i did! this move became the 8th time i’ve moved in 4 years. that’s twice a year. TWICE A YEAR. you would think i was a pro at it but i’m definitely not. i carry the same crap with me from one place to the next. confession: i’m a bit of a hoarder.

around all that crazy time earlier this year, i also thought it was a good time to start a photography business/project. while it’s not yet official and right now it is part time gig, it gave me LIFE at a time when so many things were uncertain. being able to unleash my creativity through a lens was an unexpected joy. and i will hold on to that for the rest of my life. here are just a handful of my favourites so far…

i’m in a good place right now, things aren’t perfect (are they ever?), there are many aspects of my life that could be better but I recently started to appreciate the incredible details I am blessed with. and wow, there are many.

i will leave things there but stay tuned. i haven’t yet decided whether i’ll be blogging once a week or once a month – but i’m back and i’m glad.

monday favourites

2015, Blogging, Culture, November

good writers give me life. so when i stumble on new bloggers whose lyrical ways have me all **you’re not selling anything (specifically) but here. take my money already**… i just need to share them with you.

this year i came across a couple of new bloggers who turned me into a stalking fangirl mess. i subscribed, followed on twitter, tweeted and retweeted and i may or may not follow them on instagram too.

ash ambirge rocks my socks because she tells it as it is. point blank. she’s the kind of woman i would sit in a coffee shop with for hours and hours. she runs the middle finger project

reading diana la counte’s posts on our city lights stirred something in me. and although our lives are not the same, she writes in a way that resonates with me.

Group of Business People Working on an Office Desk

writing goddess meg fee recently released the ebook ‘places i stopped on the way home’. a literary feast of 16 beautifully written essays of meg’s dating life. if there was an award for best lifestyle writer of all time she would get my vote in a heartbeat.

i turn to this nigerian/ghanian beauty for my fashion and home inspirations.

my brain has yet to get on the fact that it’s monday. so i shared one of my favourite inspiration videos of 2014 in this morning’s marketing meeting. because sometimes we all need a pep talk:

day 12 | summer favourites

2015, Blogging, July

i flipped things around a little and instead of posting pictures today (as today is my actual birthday!) i did it for yesterday instead as that is when i really celebrated it!

and instead of an interview i’m going to review some summer favourites!

last year i posted this list of 101 things to do in the summer in britain

summer is my favourite because:
1. it’s my birthday
3. holidays
4. happier people
5. BBQ’s

this year i’m also sharing favourites from some of my readers!

BBQs, late night walks when it is still warm and trips to the beach!
kerry, reading uk

festivals and picnics at hyde park or greenwich in london
jessie, london uk

beach bbq’s, rambo camping and renting pedalos.
mike from teesside. whey <— teeside is in yorkshire (north england) and whey is a northern word so i’m keeping it in there. look it up!

drive-in movies and pool parties!
stacie, usa

Spending time in my garden.
bev, reading uk

baseball games and 4th july.
jessica, usa

Picnics & BBQs. I don’t know why but there is just something I love about eating outside in the summer!

day 2 | five favourite youtubers

2015, Blogging, Culture, Inspiration, July

shirley b eniang

shirley is probably my favourite and my go to for make-up and hair tips. she’s got a clean and fresh look. she also inspired my white-on-white obsession (when it comes room décor). she’s got such a great energy and can i add that she’s also gorgeous? #girlcrush right there.

patricia bright

patricia is right up there with shirley. i just love her positive attitude to life! her and her husband are an adorable couple too #relationshipgoals

sonna rele

her voice tho. i stumbled on sonna last year and have been keeping up with her music monday posts. i love watching her journey and look forward to seeing what the future hold for her.

soul pancake

i’ve talked about soul pancake a couple of times. one of the best things on the internet. sight alongside humans of new york, soul pancake brings a sense of peace, love and all things good back to humanity.  i’m not a cat person…but kittens. oh my lanta.

how it should have ended

because we all need to have alternative endings to movies. literally.

day 1 | welcome and 10 things you didn’t know about me

2015, Blogging, July

hello! if you’ve recently started following my blog – welcome! and for those of you who have been following for some time – thank you! and i hope you all enjoy these next 31 days!

a little background, i’ve been blogging on this is my m dot for about 2 1/2 years now and it has been a fantastic and difficult journey at the same time. i initially started because i lived in the u s of a and blogging was a great way to keep friends and family up-to-date with what was going on with my international adventures. since moving back to good old blighty in 2014 it gave me an opportunity to evolve a bit more, turning this into a lifestyle blog.

and every july, at least for the last two, i dedicated it to blogging everyday. so here goes and i hope you enjoy the journey…

10 random things you didn’t know about me

  1. i have the biggest girl crush on cece from new girl.
  2. i’m 5″3 and taller than my mum
  3. i can do pretty good yorkshire and african-american accents … passed off as african-american at a house party once! (when i lived state-side)
  4. i’m actually incredible introverted but fight that everyday
  5. i really can’t stand green olives –> because you really wanted to know that
  6. i have a slight dairy intolerance (mostly milk) but I’m obsessed with shakes and ice cream
  7. i really really really want a french bulldog
  8. in secondary school i was labelled the one most likely to have my own tv talk show
  9. i’m afraid of heights and it’s getting worse the older i get
  10. i spilled a lot hot oil on my feet last year while frying some plantains. my genius aunties rubbed in egg yolk, salt and raw shea butter. the pain dulled within 2 hours and left absolutely no scarring. my 2014 miracle.

day one – check!

if you’d like to join in on the blogging everyday this month, check out the details here and don’t forget to mention my blog!

it’s that time of year again #bedij15

2015, Blogging, June

it’s nearly july!! where has 2015 gone?

and that means it’s almost my birthday month. i’m not going to lie folks, i’m a little weirded out. it’s my 30th.

that’s right, the big THREE-O.

i’m weirded out because thirty sounds so. mature.

and i feel so far from it.

i mean i now have to tick a different box.

for the last 2 years i have enjoyed blogging every single day for the month of july. it’s a fun experience and definitely refreshing to post frequently. blogging is one of creative outlets that i keep saying i need to do more often…so this is my annual opportunity to!

if you’re new to blogging, a veteran or somewhere in between i’d like to invite you to join me on #bedij15

this is a great way to get back on the blogosphere if you have fallen off the wagon a little (like me!). last year i got the pleasure of blogging alongside my birthday twin, hippiechickj. it was hella fun.

here are some quick tips on how to keep it up for the entire month:

blog everyday quick tips

come back tomorrow as i take you through the 31 posts for july.

3 courses, 3 countries, 3 days | #comingsoon

2015, April, Blogging, Culture, Food, Travel

it’s 1.18am and i’m still awake. i don’t know whyyyyyy.

anyway.since i am awake…

roughly {and i mean really roughly} two years ago, i had an idea.

it was mostly around the time when i was living in america and was feeling incredibly europe-sick. i missed how easy AND quick it is to get to a different country on this side of the world. as in —> 2 hours and 30mins from london to paris #eurostar

so i thought…

why not combine my love for food and passion for travelling into one?

and so the 3 courses, 3 countries, 1 day trip was born.

however. when i moved back home to england last year and i started the planning the trip, i quickly realised that trying to do breakfast, lunch and dinner in 3 countries in one day was going to be a challenge. flights and train times were working against me. i also wanted to make sure i enjoyed and savoured each moment … i mean who wants to rush a meal in paris? #nah

so i decided it would be better to spread it across 3 days. 3 days of glorious food and sight seeing in 3 beautiful cities.

when #wonderlust comes to life.

“Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere.”
Isabelle Eberhardt, The Nomad: The Diaries of Isabelle Eberhardt

of course i will be blogging about it. so watch this space. and catch it real time on my twitter and instagram feeds.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”
Mark Twain

for the new year

2014, Blogging, December, Inspiration, Travel

last year i talked about having more faith in 2014. and i’m still working on it.

2014 has been a year of ups and downs, but it’s also been a steady wave. does that even make sense?

it’s been a year of transitioning and learning and i don’t think this transitioning is over. to be honest i don’t think i’m ever going to get off the transitioning train!

because life is a constant transition.

“look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else.”
― tom stoppard, rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead

what have i learned in 2014?

that i can’t control everything. but also that the act of letting go requires some kind of stability.

a sense stability in a state of instability.

“i’ve always believed there are moments in our lives which can be defined as a transition between the before and after, between the cause and the effect.”
― benjamin x. wretlind, castles: a fictional memoir of a girl with scissors

i learnt that laughter has great healing power.

and forgiveness is strength.

i learnt that i love frosty mornings and crunchy leaves as much as i love lazy afternoons on a humid july day.

i realised that it is never too late. and giving things a second go can be all the more worth it.

for 2015 i promise to wear even more lipstick. choose laughter over anger (counting to 10 helps right?). travel…

…wait no. what i really mean is explore. text less, call more. spend time. take risks. take photos. i need to take more photos.

“life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

i promise to unplug more often.

here’s to a happier, transitional, gorgeous 2015.
