day 8: a tip for tuesday | travel

2014, Blogging, Culture, July, Travel

happy tuesday! although i didn’t follow my planned post for yesterday {my fears}, fellow blogger and birthday twin did! check out what hippie chick j said about her fears. and not only do we share the same birthday, we also share a LOVE FOR ICE CREAM. i don’t know if that what happens to you when you’re born on 12th july 1985, but yes. just. yes. check out her post here.

today’s post was a piece of advice and i don’t advice as much as i have a tip.

actually a couple of tips.

i love to travel {who doesn’t?}. and what i love even more than traveling is traveling cheap. or better put, traveling on a budget. so here are a few things i’ve picked up from  my travels:

  1. if you are flying from an obscure or expensive airport try flying from neighboring airport. for example when flying home from salt lake city to london i often found flights were cheaper from las vegas or los angeles. and you might remember that i saved well over $700 flying to new york and then on to london. same goes for popular airports sometimes! it’s worth doing a little bit of shopping around.
  2. if you don’t mind staying at a b+b or renting a spare room then do so. you’ll more than likely get all the insider info from the locals and save money on a hotel! my favourites are 9flats.com and airbnb.com
  3. now i’m going to get a little more area specific. if you’re going to paris and want to get to the top of the eiffel tower, walk up to the first level then purchase your lift tickets from there. saves you queuing at ground level – which can be rather long! {thanks jo for that one!}
  4. if there are an even number of you traveling to london and you want to see all the typical touristy sites then you can get 2-for-1 coupons with your train ticket via days out london.
  5. check out this awesome travel tips article from dystractify.com. it’s absolutely brilliant, and it includes using a private window when booking travel as ‘travel sites often track your visits and will raise the price simply because you’ve visited before.’ DID YOU KNOW THIS? i certainly didn’t!!
  6. for easy, cheap flights around europe use either ryanair or easyjet. you’ll fly into not so popular airports but it won’t be far from the major cities.
  7. i’ve found some of the best flight deals on kayak.com
  8. pack smart. i’ll be talking about this soon as i’m headed to paris for 3 days at the end of the month!
  9. use public transport. so. much. cheaper.
  10. eat where the locals eat.

these are just a few. and i have so many more. but as i said in #8, i’ll be posting about my paris trip next month so watch this space.
