after a while

2013, June

for every. recent. emotion. i. have. felt. here’s a serving of exactly what i needed. i devoured every single word like it was cake batter ice cream with crushed snickers pieces. it hit me like wham. and i felt that perhaps one of you might need that too. once again, thank you pinterest.

after a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security.
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman,
not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow’s ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight.
after a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
and you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn.

homemade burgers & chips {fries}

2013, June

happy sunday! and happy father’s day to all the wonderful fathers, uncles, brothers out there who take care of their own. i got to skype with my dad yesterday which was hilarious as he was using skype on his phone and all i could see was his bald head 🙂

i follow fellow blogger things we make and when i saw the post ‘steak and chips‘ last week {and the photos in all their mouthwatering glory} i just had to try it. as the weekend drew nearer i was craving a burger. so. come friday at work i’m talking to my boss about sunday dinner and she mentions her favorite recipe for chips {fries} and her favorite tip for homemade burgers. yes we talk about food almost everyday. it’s fantastic.

so… here is my take on homemade burgers and chips

yum 3

all in all it took me about an hour including prep time. firstly i prepared the chips. i used half a regular  potato and half a sweet potato. i followed this recipe for oven baked parmesan fries {modified for one). *tip* the sweet potato fries cook pretty quickly. in fact mine were a little on the burnt side by the time i took them out. i would perhaps suggest cooking them for 30mins instead of the 45mins for the regular potatoes…or just watch them as they cook!

yum 4

next i got the meat seasoned and ready to cook. i didn’t actually follow a recipe for this. i just added a few of my favorites like a garlic clove, season all, italian seasoning and black pepper. my boss suggested i add my favorite sauce {honey bbq is mine!} and let me tell you. life changing.

yum 5

i then waited until the fries had 15 mins to go then put a pan on medium heat to cook the burgers. they didn’t take long at all, and i turned them over a few times while cooking so they were good and brown on both sides.

i’m not a big bread eater so i didn’t use burger buns but lettuce instead, which is a great alternative especially if you want to avoid a carb overload.

yum 2

it was absolutely fun making it and it tasted delish too! i’m kinda in a ‘homemaker’ mode as i made two pillow cases today too. to be honest it’s about time as i’ve not used my new sewing machine since i bought it over 3 months ago. and i promise to write up my thrift store post very, very soon.

yum 1

i’m about to go out for a walk with some friends {i need to walk off my sunday food coma}. hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

style is ageless

2013, June

you know what, since i started this blog 5 months ago i haven’t once written a fashion inspired post! *epic fail*

actually, i’m not a complete failure. i’m working with boho chic / rockabilly / electic / cool fashion bloggers to bring you some exciting insights into the fashion world, and i’m coining it, magenta and heels. so watch this space!

fashion is indeed ageless and timeless. and don’t you just love it? how many times do we see styles come round around the fashion merry-go-round? from bright-colored trousers to peplum shirts and skirts, from platform heels to blood-red lipstick. then there are the styles that seem to just be at the forefront of every fashion era.

i adore hollywood icon marilyn monroe. she was curvy before it was cool.

chic, dazzling and striking beaut audrey hepburn is also on this list.

its her fro and her “i don’t care what you think” style that. i. just. love. thank you solange knowles for being so damn fabulous.

and i saw this on pinterest and couldn’t help but repin and share on today’s post. absolutely. stunning.

renee davis is a breast cancer survivor turned model. inspiring, motivating…i am in awe. at 57 she looks incredible.

one thing i do love about these women, that inspires me, is that they seem to be stylish for themselves. not to please the media, or anybody else for that matter. i completely firmly and fully believe that style is personal and ageless. and here is to letting ourselves embrace it.

my salt lake city

2013, June

you gotta love fridays. end of the week. beginning of the weekend. and with being a student and working part-time, i only work 8am-12pm everyday with no classes on mondays or fridays. it’s like a long weekend every weekend {ish}.

i had a couple of errands to run, like posting a birthday package to one of my besties back home in england {fedex tried to charge me $100 for a 10 oz. package whereas usps charged me $14….you what?!}, headed to the bank and then the library. i decided to take a few snaps on my walk; there really is no point driving around the downtown area {i also don’t have a car…yet} and because the weather was gorgeous! i really did fall in love with it all over again. there are dozens of little hideaway theatres, coffee shops, book stores.. not that i go in all of these places but it certainly adds to the character of the city. and i love that.

here are a few snaps!

these were all taken on my iPhone and i used the aviary photo editing app to edit them. i absolutely adore this app…and i just wanted to show you a couple of before and after shots to show you what i mean:

this one might be a bit more obvious:

i’m no professional, but i sure do feel like one with that app! {and it’s free}

i’ve got some sewing projects to start this weekend, which i have delayed long enough, and a dinner party on sunday, it should be a great weekend!

time for a little motivation

2013, June

eric thomas.

this guy. the first time i watched this video i was completely. blown. away. i watch it at least once a week #truestory

if you are in need of a little motivation, for whatever you are doing in your life, watch this. if you don’t need motivation, watch this.

{success is} “to be able, at any moment, sacrifice what you are for what you will become

pain is temporary, it may last for a minute, an hour, a day, or even a year but eventually it will subside, if you quit however it will last forever

i can guarantee it will be the best 13mins 18secs of your day.

i finally did it

2013, June

i’ve needed a break from social media for a long time. a very long time. and you might remember me posting about this a few weeks ago in my unplugged experiment post. well it’s taken me that long to pluck up the courage to do so {who would have thought that i needed to ‘pluck up the courage’?}.

take a break

okay so it’s only been a few hours but already i feel liberated. now you might ask why i’m blogging if i’m liberating myself from social media…well i personally view the blog space as a way to express my thoughts of the day/week/month and to share experiences with friends and family (who read this). in many ways i find it less intrusive {go figure}.

what made me do this? have you ever felt the need to just withdraw? i’m going through what one might call a “finding myself” time right now and social media is not helping. it’s oh so very easy to compare our lives with the photo lives of those on facebook, or any other platform for that matter. comparison is not healthy. in other words we compare “our behind the scenes with another’s highlight reel“. and social media is the petrol/gas that keeps that illusion going.

there is so much fun to be had and good to be done with the incredible ways we can connect with each other. after all, i was hired for my job {which i am loving} as a result of being found on linkedin. but sometimes, just sometimes i’m dying to just switch off. and when i started feeling like i was losing control of my ability to do that, at any time, i knew something needed to be done. and done quickly

i typed in ‘take a break from social media’ into google out of curiosity and clicked on the first link from an organization {or so i’m assuming} called church marketing. here is their briliant and at some points quite realistic, top 10 list of reasons to take a break from social media {with my added commentary of course}:

1. you don’t have time to be in the word, but you have time to read twitter.
2. you get annoyed reading posts of people bragging about their lives {amen to that!}
3. someone says something funny in a conversation, and your first thought is, “i need to tweet that” {sooo true}
4. your pastor says something compelling in church and instead of applying it to your life, you make it your facebook status
5. you are tired of updating people about your life via 140 characters
6. you only know what is going on with your friends because you saw it on social media
7. you check instagram five times an hour, even though no one is posting new pictures {guilty as charged}
8. when you get in bed, instead of resting, you turn on your iPad to skim through twitter one more time {iPhone for me}
9. you post pictures of what you read during your quiet time on twitter, facebook, and instagram (matthew 6, anyone?)
10. your spouse asks you a question, and you are clueless about how to respond because you were distracted by what you were reading on your phone

and isn’t this crazy?! from the recent pope’s election…

check out the rest of the article here.

i don’t know how long i’ll be gone for,  i’m just going to see how it goes. but for now i think it’s time for me to wrap up {soap box anyone?}. i’m intrigued to know if any of you have a taken a social media hiatus? i would love to hear about the experience!

life time challenge

2013, June

“people are often unreasonable and self-centered.  forgive them anyway.
if you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.  be kind anyway.
if you are honest, people may cheat you.  be honest anyway.
if you find happiness, people may be jealous.  be happy anyway.
the good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.  do good anyway.
give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.  give your best anyway.
for you see, in the end, it is between you and God.  it was never between you and them anyway.”

mother teresa

probably the hardest and probably the most rewarding challenge of our lives.
